Sleigh'r Dark Doüble Alt Ale

Sleigh’r Dark Doüble Alt Ale

Christmas…already? Well if Christmas is illustrated by a Satanic-looking Santa Claus and a beer name Sleigh’r, then I can roll with Christmas in October. Sleigh’r Dark Doüble Alt Ale from Ninkasi Brewing Company possesses a style that I have never seen (much less drank), a dark double alt. So, this beer is essentially an Altbier on steroids. The Alt style derives from fermenting with a ale yeast at near lagering temperatures (60-50 degrees). This style originated  in Rhineland and dates back as far as 3,000 years, which is why the style is titled alt or German for “old”. The Sleigh’r is an incredibly new twist on an “old” style with its aggressive flavor profile and higher ABV.

A little bit about Nugget hops used to brew Sleigh’r. The Nugget hybrid (derived from a cross between Brewer’s Gold and a high alpha acid male) was released by the USDA in 1982. The Nugget hop is a highly bitter variety (9.5-14% alpha acid), and possesses flavor qualities of resin, herbal, and woody tones.

Sleigh’r Dark Doüble Alt Ale Notes
Appearance: Poured a dark red with an ephemeral off-white head
Aroma: A heavy mixture of roasted malt aromas with some cherries and chocolate on the nose
Mouthfeel: Slides down smooth with a bit a lingering syrupiness.
Taste: Heavy doses of dark roast, some chocolate, and hints of spice. The Nugget hops come on later with almost noble-hop flavor with some Northwest bitter bite.
Overall: I throughly enjoyed the Sleigh’r, although it is definitely suited more to be a winter warmer. It will surely make a return to my frig for the colder months ahead.
